‘ime pana jhāyinomhā, jhāyinomhāti jhāyanti pajjhāyanti nijjhāyanti avajjhāyanti.  
‘They say, “We practice absorption meditation! We practice absorption meditation!” And they meditate and concentrate and contemplate and ruminate.  
Kimime jhāyanti, kintime jhāyanti, kathaṁ ime jhāyantī’ti?  
Why do they practice absorption meditation? In what way do they practice absorption meditation? How do they practice absorption meditation?’  
Tattha dhammayogā ca bhikkhū nappasīdanti, jhāyī ca bhikkhū nappasīdanti, na ca bahujanahitāya paṭipannā honti bahujanasukhāya bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussānaṁ.  
In this case the mendicants who practice discernment of principles are not inspired, and the mendicants who practice absorption meditation are not inspired. And they’re not acting for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.  
Idha panāvuso, jhāyī bhikkhū dhammayoge bhikkhū apasādenti:  
Now, take a case where mendicants who practice absorption meditation rebuke mendicants who practice discernment of principles:  
Tattha jhāyī ca bhikkhū nappasīdanti, dhammayogā ca bhikkhū nappasīdanti, na ca bahujanahitāya paṭipannā honti bahujanasukhāya bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussānaṁ.  
In this case the mendicants who practice absorption meditation are not inspired, and the mendicants who practice discernment of principles are not inspired. And they’re not acting for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.

Imissā ca, bhikkhave, mahāpathaviyā sinerussa ca pabbatarājassa jhāyamānānaṁ dayhamānānaṁ acci vātena khittā yāva brahmalokāpi gacchati.   And as they blaze and burn the flames are swept by the wind as far as the Brahmā realm.  
Sinerussa, bhikkhave, pabbatarājassa jhāyamānassa dayhamānassa vinassamānassa mahatā tejokhandhena abhibhūtassa yojanasatikānipi kūṭāni palujjanti dviyojanasatikānipi, tiyojanasatikānipi, catuyojanasatikānipi, pañcayojanasatikānipi kūṭāni palujjanti.  
Sineru the king of mountains blazes and burns, crumbling as it’s overcome by the great fire. And meanwhile, mountain peaks a hundred leagues high, or two, three, four, or five hundred leagues high disintegrate as they burn.  
Imissā ca, bhikkhave, mahāpathaviyā sinerussa ca pabbatarājassa jhāyamānānaṁ dayhamānānaṁ neva chārikā paññāyati na masi.  
And when the great earth and Sineru the king of mountains blaze and burn, no soot or ash is found.  
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, sappissa vā telassa vā jhāyamānassa dayhamānassa neva chārikā paññāyati na masi;  
It’s like when ghee or oil blaze and burn, and neither ashes nor soot are found.  
evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, imissā ca mahāpathaviyā sinerussa ca pabbatarājassa jhāyamānānaṁ dayhamānānaṁ neva chārikā paññāyati na masi.  
In the same way, when the great earth and Sineru the king of mountains blaze and burn, no soot or ash is found.

So tathāgatena vā tathāgatasāvakena vā jhāyinā samāpattikusalena paracittakusalena paracittapariyāyakusalena samanuyuñjiyamāno samanuggāhiyamāno samanubhāsiyamāno irīṇaṁ āpajjati vicinaṁ āpajjati anayaṁ āpajjati byasanaṁ āpajjati anayabyasanaṁ āpajjati.  
Grilled in this way they get stuck or lose their way. They fall to ruin and disaster.

“Ājānīyajhāyitaṁ kho, saddha, jhāya;   “Sandha, meditate like a thoroughbred,  
Assakhaḷuṅko hi, saddha, doṇiyā baddho ‘yavasaṁ yavasan’ti jhāyati.  
A wild colt, tied up by the feeding trough, meditates: ‘Fodder, fodder!’  
So doṇiyā baddho ‘yavasaṁ yavasan’ti jhāyati.  
Tied up by the feeding trough they just meditate: ‘Fodder, fodder!’  
So kāmarāgaṁyeva antaraṁ katvā jhāyati pajjhāyati nijjhāyati avajjhāyati,  
Harboring sensual desire within they meditate and concentrate and contemplate and ruminate.  
So vicikicchaṁyeva antaraṁ katvā jhāyati pajjhāyati nijjhāyati avajjhāyati.  
Harboring doubt within they meditate and concentrate and contemplate and ruminate.  
So pathavimpi nissāya jhāyati, āpampi nissāya jhāyati, tejampi nissāya jhāyati, vāyampi nissāya jhāyati, ākāsānañcāyatanampi nissāya jhāyati, viññāṇañcāyatanampi nissāya jhāyati, ākiñcaññāyatanampi nissāya jhāyati, nevasaññānāsaññāyatanampi nissāya jhāyati, idhalokampi nissāya jhāyati, paralokampi nissāya jhāyati, yampidaṁ diṭṭhaṁ sutaṁ mutaṁ viññātaṁ pattaṁ pariyesitaṁ anuvicaritaṁ manasā, tampi nissāya jhāyati.  
They meditate dependent on earth, water, fire, and air. They meditate dependent on the dimension of infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, or neither perception nor non-perception. They meditate dependent on this world or the other world. They meditate dependent on what is seen, heard, thought, known, attained, sought, or explored by the mind.  
Bhadro hi, saddha, assājānīyo doṇiyā baddho na ‘yavasaṁ yavasan’ti jhāyati.  
A fine thoroughbred, tied up by the feeding trough, doesn’t meditate: ‘Fodder, fodder!’  
So doṇiyā baddho na ‘yavasaṁ yavasan’ti jhāyati.  
Tied up by the feeding trough they don’t meditate: ‘Fodder, fodder!’

When a fine thoroughbred meditates like this, the gods together with Indra, Brahmā, and the Progenitor worship them from afar:  
yampi nissāya jhāyasī’”ti.

yampi nissāya jhāyasī’”ti.

That’s how that fine thoroughbred person doesn’t meditate dependent on earth, water, fire, and air. They don’t meditate dependent on the dimension of infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, or neither perception nor non-perception. They don’t meditate dependent on this world or the other world.  
yampidaṁ diṭṭhaṁ sutaṁ mutaṁ viññātaṁ pattaṁ pariyesitaṁ anuvicaritaṁ manasā, tampi nissāya na jhāyati;  
They don’t meditate dependent on what is seen, heard, thought, known, attained, sought, or explored by the mind.  
jhāyati ca pana.  
Yet they do meditate.

2.43. И тогда, почтенные, брахман Махаговинда, приказал построить к востоку от города новую обитель, в течение четырех месяцев предавался [там] уединению, стремился к подвигу сострадания,  
Then the Great Steward had a new ceremonial hall built to the east of his citadel, where he went on retreat for the four months of the rainy season and practiced the absorption on compassion.

whoever goes on retreat for the four months of the rainy season and practices the absorption on compassion sees Brahmā and discusses with him.

“Mount Vediyaka must be on fire today, blazing and burning!

“My dear Pañcasikha, it is hard for one like me to get near the Realized Ones while they are on retreat practicing absorption, enjoying absorption.

Te araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭiyo karitvā paṇṇakuṭīsu jhāyanti vītaṅgārā vītadhūmā pannamusalā sāyaṁ sāyamāsāya pāto pātarāsāya gāmanigamarājadhāniyo osaranti ghāsamesamānā.   Сделав в лесу хижину из листьев, они предавались созерцанию в хижинах из листьев; без пылающих углей, без дыма; с пестиком из листьев они выходили в деревни, торговые поселки и царскую столицу в поисках пищи — вечером для ужина, утром для завтрака.  
They built leaf huts in a wilderness region where they meditated pure and bright, without lighting cooking fires or digging the soil. They came down in the morning for breakfast and in the evening for supper to the village, town, or royal capital seeking a meal.  
Te ghāsaṁ paṭilabhitvā punadeva araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭīsu jhāyanti.

When they had obtained food they continued to meditate in the leaf huts.

„Ведь эти почтенные существа, неспособные предаваться созерцанию в лесу в хижинах из листьев, пошли в окрестности деревень, окрестности торговых поселков и, обосновавшись там, стали заниматься книгами. Теперь они не созерцают“.  
‘These beings were unable to keep up with their meditation in the leaf huts in the wilderness. They came down to the neighborhood of a village or town where they dwelt compiling texts. Now they don’t meditate.’  
Na dānime jhāyantīti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘ajjhāyakā, ajjhāyakā’ tveva tatiyaṁ akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.  
„Теперь они не созерцают“, Васеттха, и [стали зваться] „не созерцающие“, и „не созерцающие“ было третьим возникшим [для них] словом.  
‘Now they don’t meditate’ is the meaning of ‘reciter’, the third term applied to them.

Idha, bhante, ekacco sacco cassa saddho ca, na ca kuhako, na ca lapako, na ca nemittiko, na ca nippesiko, na ca lābhena lābhaṁ nijigīsanako, indriyesu guttadvāro, bhojane mattaññū, samakārī, jāgariyānuyogamanuyutto, atandito, āraddhavīriyo, jhāyī, satimā, kalyāṇapaṭibhāno, gatimā, dhitimā, matimā, na ca kāmesu giddho, sato ca nipako ca.   Ведь человек, господин, должен быть правдивым, верующим, не обманщиком, не болтуном, не прорицателем, не фокусником, не желающим страстно все новой и новой прибыли, охраняющим врата жизненных способностей, знающим меру в пище, мягким в действиях, склонным к бодрствованию, не ленивым, полным сил, знающим, вдумчивым, приятным в речах, должного поведения, стойким, понимающим, не жадным до чувственных удовольствий, наделенным способностью самосознания, рассудительным.  
It’s when someone is honest and faithful. They don’t use deceit, flattery, hinting, or belittling, and they don’t use material things to chase after other material things. They guard the sense doors and eat in moderation. They’re fair, dedicated to wakefulness, tireless, energetic, and meditative. They have good memory, eloquence, range, retention, and thoughtfulness. They’re not greedy for sensual pleasures. They are mindful and alert.

Suppose there was an oil lamp burning. The light appears dependent on the flame, and the flame appears dependent on the light.

“Surely, Mister Ānanda, it is owing to the good sirs who meditate, making a habit of meditating.  
Jhāyino ceva bhavanto jhānasīlino ca.

For the good sirs do in fact meditate and make a habit of meditating.  
Jhāyī ceva so bhavaṁ gotamo ahosi jhānasīlī ca.

Hiding sensual desire within, they meditate and concentrate and contemplate and ruminate.

Seyyathāpi, āvuso kaccāna, telappadīpassa jhāyato telampi aparisuddhaṁ vaṭṭipi aparisuddhā.   Представь, как если бы лампа горела за счёт грязного масла и грязного фитиля.  
Suppose an oil lamp was burning with impure oil and impure wick.  
So telassapi aparisuddhattā vaṭṭiyāpi aparisuddhattā andhandhaṁ viya jhāyati;  
Из-за загрязнённости масла и фитиля она бы горела тускло.  
Because of the impurity of the oil and the wick it burns dimly, as it were.  
So kāyaduṭṭhullassapi na suppaṭippassaddhattā thinamiddhassapi na susamūhatattā uddhaccakukkuccassapi na suppaṭivinītattā andhandhaṁ viya jhāyati.  
Из-за этого он медитирует, скажем так, тускло.  
Because of this they practice absorption dimly, as it were.
