… Indriyesu guttadvārānaṁ yadidaṁ nando.  … who guard the sense doors is Nanda. 

Tatridaṁ, bhante, pūraṇena kassapena paramasukkābhijāti paññattā, nando vaccho kiso saṅkicco makkhali gosālo.  And the ultimate white class of rebirth consists of Nanda Vaccha, Kisa Saṅkicca, and the bamboo-staffed ascetic Gosāla. 

Idha me, bhante, nando nāma ekaputtako piyo manāpo.  I had an only son called Nanda who I loved dearly. 

Kimaññatra, bhikkhave, nando indriyesu guttadvāro, bhojane mattaññū, jāgariyaṁ anuyutto, satisampajaññena samannāgato, yehi nando sakkoti paripuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ carituṁ.  How could he live the full and pure spiritual life unless he guards the sense doors, eats in moderation, is dedicated to wakefulness, and has mindfulness and situational awareness? 
Sace, bhikkhave, nandassa puratthimā disā āloketabbā hoti, sabbaṁ cetasā samannāharitvā nando puratthimaṁ disaṁ āloketi: 
If he has to look to the east, he wholeheartedly concentrates before looking, thinking: 
anudisā anuviloketabbā hoti, sabbaṁ cetasā samannāharitvā nando anudisaṁ anuviloketi: 
If he has to survey the intermediate directions, he wholeheartedly concentrates before looking, thinking: 
Idha, bhikkhave, nando paṭisaṅkhā yoniso āhāraṁ āhāreti: 
Nanda reflects rationally on the food he eats: 
Idha, bhikkhave, nando divasaṁ caṅkamena nisajjāya āvaraṇīyehi dhammehi cittaṁ parisodheti; 
Nanda practices walking and sitting meditation by day, purifying his mind from obstacles. 
Kimaññatra, bhikkhave, nando indriyesu guttadvāro, bhojane mattaññū, jāgariyaṁ anuyutto, satisampajaññena samannāgato, yehi nando sakkoti paripuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ caritun”ti. 
How could Nanda live the full and pure spiritual life unless he guards the sense doors, eats in moderation, is dedicated to wakefulness, and has mindfulness and situational awareness?” 

nando kāraṇḍavena cāti.

Ānando nando upanando dvādasa,  Двенадцать между ними [были] – Нанды и Ананды, Упананды 
There are twelve Ānandas, Nandas, and Upanandas, 

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho nando devaputto bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:  Стоя рядом, молодое божество Нанда произнесло эти строфы в присутствии Благословенного: 
Standing to one side, the god Nanda recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence: 

Nando nandivisālo ca,   

Atha kho āyasmā nando bhagavato mātucchāputto ākoṭitapaccākoṭitāni cīvarāni pārupitvā akkhīni añjetvā acchaṁ pattaṁ gahetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ nandaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:  Then Venerable Nanda—the Buddha’s cousin on his mother’s side—dressed in nicely pressed and ironed robes, applied eyeshadow, and took a polished black bowl. He went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him: 
Atha kho āyasmā nando aparena samayena āraññiko ca piṇḍapātiko ca paṁsukūliko ca kāmesu ca anapekkho vihāsīti. 
Then some time later Venerable Nanda stayed in the wilderness, ate only almsfood, wore rag robes, and lived without concern for sensual pleasures. 

visākho nando tisso ca;   

Tena kho pana samayena nando gopālako bhagavato avidūre ṭhito hoti.  Now at that time Nanda the cowherd was sitting not far from the Buddha. 
Atha kho nando gopālako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: 
Then he said to the Buddha: 
Atha kho nando gopālako sāmikānaṁ gāvo niyyātetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: 
Then Nanda, after returning the cows to their owners, went up to the Buddha and said to him, 
Alattha kho nando gopālako bhagavato santike pabbajjaṁ, alattha upasampadaṁ. 
And the cowherd Nanda received the going forth, the ordination in the Buddha’s presence. 
Acirūpasampanno ca panāyasmā nando eko vūpakaṭṭho …pe… 
Not long after his ordination, 
aññataro ca panāyasmā nando arahataṁ ahosīti. 
Venerable Nanda became one of the perfected. 

Nando ca atha hemako;  Nanda and then Hemaka, 

(iccāyasmā nando)  said Venerable Nanda, 
(iccāyasmā nando) 
said Venerable Nanda, 
(iccāyasmā nando) 
said Venerable Nanda, 

nando ca atha hemako.  Nanda and then Hemaka,

Nando ca sirimā ceva, 

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā ca sāriputto āyasmā ca mahāmoggallāno āyasmā ca mahākassapo āyasmā ca mahākaccāno āyasmā ca mahākoṭṭhiko āyasmā ca mahākappino āyasmā ca mahācundo āyasmā ca anuruddho āyasmā ca revato āyasmā ca nando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu.  Now at that time a number of senior monks approached the Buddha—Venerables Sāriputta, Mahāmoggallāna, Mahākassapa, Mahākaccāna, Mahākoṭṭhita, Mahākappina, Mahācunda, Anuruddha, Revata, and Nanda.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā nando bhagavato bhātā mātucchāputto sambahulānaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ evamāroceti:  Now at that time Venerable Nanda, the Buddha’s brother and maternal cousin, informed several mendicants: 
“āyasmā, bhante, nando bhagavato bhātā mātucchāputto sambahulānaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ evamāroceti: 
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho so bhikkhu bhagavato paṭissutvā yenāyasmā nando tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ nandaṁ etadavoca: 
“Yes, sir,” that monk replied. He went to Nanda and said to him, 
“Evamāvuso”ti kho āyasmā nando tassa bhikkhuno paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ nandaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: 
“Yes, reverend,” Nanda replied. He went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him: 
“āyasmā kira nando bhagavato bhātā mātucchāputto accharānaṁ hetu brahmacariyaṁ carati; 
“It seems Venerable Nanda—who is both the Buddha’s half-brother and maternal cousin—leads the spiritual life for the sake of nymphs. 
“bhatako kirāyasmā nando upakkitako kirāyasmā nando accharānaṁ hetu brahmacariyaṁ carati; 
“It seems Nanda is a hireling, it seems he is a lackey: he leads the spiritual life for the sake of nymphs. 
Atha kho āyasmā nando sahāyakānaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ bhatakavādena ca upakkitakavādena ca aṭṭīyamāno harāyamāno jigucchamāno eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. 
Then Nanda—embarrassed, ashamed, and disgusted at being called a hireling and a lackey—living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness. 
Aññataro kho panāyasmā nando arahataṁ ahosi. 
Venerable Nanda became one of the perfected. 
“āyasmā, bhante, nando bhagavato bhātā mātucchāputto āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī”ti. 
“Sir, Venerable Nanda—who is both the Buddha’s half-brother and maternal cousin—has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. He lives having realized it with his own insight due to the ending of defilements.” 
“nando āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī”ti. 
“Nanda has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. He lives having realized it with his own insight due to the ending of defilements.” 
Atha kho āyasmā nando tassā rattiyā accayena yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā nando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: 
Then, when the night had passed, Nanda went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, 
‘nando āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī’ti. 
you had realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom. 
‘āyasmā, bhante, nando bhagavato bhātā mātucchāputto āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī’ti.
