Dhamma.Gift (the application)
The Dhamma.Gift app for iPhone, iPad and Android: search and read the Pāli Canon — Suttas and Vinaya in Pāli with Russian and English translations — with or without an internet connection. Free, no ads, no tracking, no account needed.
Offline library
Download the whole library once (about 216 MB) and everything works in airplane mode: search, the table of contents, every text with its translations, and the dictionary. The download keeps going in the background and with the screen locked. Until then the app works online, exactly like the site. The library can be deleted any time: Settings → Offline library.
Search and reader
Full-text search over the whole canon, right on the device: infix matches
(kacchapa finds mahākacchapānaṁ), diacritics optional, filters by
collection and translator, and a match context that opens straight in the
reader (Search). In the reader: a text beside its
translation, reading modes, Pāli in other scripts. Tap a Pāli word — the
dictionary opens, offline too. Tap a paragraph — it is read
aloud (Voice).
Built into the phone
- Share to Dhamma.Gift. Select a word or a passage in any other app or site → Share → Dhamma.Gift, and the search results open right away. On iPhone they appear in the share sheet itself, without leaving the app you were in. A shared dhamma.gift link opens that text.
- Shortcuts on the icon. A long press on the app icon: table of contents, favorites & history, Memo, dictionary, and the texts you read last. On iPhone the same actions are available to Siri and the Shortcuts app.
- The phone's own search. In Android's system search Dhamma.Gift is offered as a place to search: the query opens as a search in the app. The texts you read recently show up there too. Android. Finding any sutta by its number or name right in the system results — coming (Android and iOS Spotlight).
- Quick Settings / Control Center. A Dhamma.Gift button in the notification shade: one tap from anywhere, offline. Android; iOS (Control Center) — coming.
- Links open in the app. A dhamma.gift link tapped in a messenger or in
notes (
https://dhamma.gift/mn1) opens the text in the app, not in the browser. - Reminders on schedule. Subscriptions — a text or a word to come back to — can remind you at a set time with a notification; a browser can't promise that with the tab closed.
Your data
Favorites, history, notes and settings stay on the device. Signing in is optional and only syncs them between your devices (Login).
Other ways to install
- APK for Android without Google Play:
dg-app-full releases
(
app-debug.apk). Android asks to confirm an install from outside Google Play. - PWA — the site installed from the browser: an icon and shortcuts, but no offline library.
