Aṅgaṇikabhāradvājattheragāthā
Aṅgaṇikabhāradvāja
“Ayoni suddhimanvesaṁ, Seeking purity the wrong way,
aggiṁ paricariṁ vane; I served the sacred fire in a grove.
Suddhimaggaṁ ajānanto, Not knowing the path to purity,
akāsiṁ amaraṁ tapaṁ.
I mortified my flesh in search of immortality.
Taṁ sukhena sukhaṁ laddhaṁ, I’ve gained this happiness by means of happiness:
passa dhammasudhammataṁ; see the excellence of the teaching!
Tisso vijjā anuppattā, I’ve attained the three knowledges
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ. and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
Brahmabandhu pure āsiṁ, I used to be brahmin by kin,
idāni khomhi brāhmaṇo; but now I really am a brahmin!
Tevijjo nhātako camhi,
I am master of the three knowledges,I’m a bathed initiate, sottiyo camhi vedagū”ti. I’m a scholar and a knowledge master.
