Sumana (2nd)
“Yadā navo pabbajito, I was only seven years old
jātiyā sattavassiko; and had just gone forth
Iddhiyā abhibhotvāna, when I overcame the mighty adder king
pannagindaṁ mahiddhikaṁ. with my psychic powers.
Upajjhāyassa udakaṁ, I brought water for my mentor
anotattā mahāsarā; from the great lake Anotatta.
Āharāmi tato disvā, When he saw me,
maṁ satthā etadabravi”. my teacher declared:
“Sāriputta imaṁ passa, “Sāriputta, see this
āgacchantaṁ kumārakaṁ; young boy coming,
Udakakumbhamādāya,
carrying a water pot,
ajjhattaṁ susamāhitaṁ. serene inside himself.
Pāsādikena vattena, His conduct inspires confidence,
kalyāṇairiyāpatho; he is of lovely deportment:
Sāmaṇeronuruddhassa, he is Anuruddha’s novice,
iddhiyā ca visārado. assured in psychic powers.
Ājānīyena ājañño, Made a thoroughbred by a thoroughbred,
sādhunā sādhukārito; made good by the good,
Vinīto anuruddhena, educated and trained by Anuruddha,
katakiccena sikkhito. who has completed his task.
So patvā paramaṁ santiṁ, Having attained ultimate peace
sacchikatvā akuppataṁ; and witnessed the unshakable,
Sāmaṇero sa sumano, that novice Sumana has the wish:
mā maṁ jaññāti icchatī”ti. ‘May no-one find me out!’”
