10: The Book of the Tens
49. Subsisting Through the Body
- DG BB TBW © Translated from the Pali by Bhikkhu Bodhi (More copyright information)
1"Bhikkhus, these ten things subsist through the body. What ten? Cold, heat, hunger, thirst, defecation, urination, bodily restraint, verbal restraint, restraint in one's livelihood, and the formative activity of existence that leads to renewed existence. [n.2058] Ponobhavikobhavasaṅkhāro. Mp: "The kamma that creates existence, the active production of renewed existence" (ponobbhaviko ti punabbhavanibbattako, bhavasaṅkhāroti bhavasaṅkharaṇakammaṁ). Presumably this is said to subsist through the body because the body is the instrument for forming and expressing volition. These ten things subsist through the body."
