10. Stains

1"Bhikkhus, possessing three qualities and without having abandoned three stains, one is deposited in hell as if brought there. What three? One is immoral and has not abandoned the stain of immorality. One is envious and has not abandoned the stain of envy. One is miserly and has not abandoned the stain of miserliness. Possessing these three qualities and without having abandoned these three stains, one is deposited in hell as if brought there.

2"Bhikkhus, possessing three qualities and having abandoned three stains, one is deposited in heaven as if brought there. What three? One is virtuous and has abandoned the stain of immorality. One is not envious and has abandoned the stain of envy. One is not miserly and has abandoned the stain of miserliness. Possessing these three qualities and having abandoned these three stains, one is deposited in heaven as if brought there."

1"Tīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato tayo male appahāya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye. Katamehi tīhi? Dussīlo ca hoti, dussīlyamalañcassa appahīnaṁ hoti; issukī ca hoti, issāmalañcassa appahīnaṁ hoti; maccharī ca hoti, maccheramalañcassa appahīnaṁ hoti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, tīhi dhammehi samannāgato ime tayo male appahāya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.

2Tīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato tayo male pahāya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge. Katamehi tīhi? Sīlavā ca hoti, dussīlyamalañcassa pahīnaṁ hoti; anissukī ca hoti, issāmalañcassa pahīnaṁ hoti; amaccharī ca hoti, maccheramalañcassa pahīnaṁ hoti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, tīhi dhammehi samannāgato ime tayo male pahāya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge"ti.

Bālavaggo paṭhamo.

3Bhayaṁ lakkhaṇacintī ca,
accayañca ayoniso;
10. Stains Akusalañca sāvajjaṁ,
sabyābajjhakhataṁ malanti.
