1"Bhikkhus, with the manifestation of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Perfectly Enlightened One, four astounding and amazing things become manifest. What four?

(1) "People delight in attachment, [n.821] Ālaya. Mp explains this narrowly as the five objects of sensual pleasure, or more broadly, as the entire round of saṁsāra. take delight in attachment, rejoice in attachment. But when a Tathāgata is teaching the Dhamma about non-attachment, [n.822] Anālaye dhamme. Mp: "The noble Dhamma opposed to attachment, based on the ending of the round." people wish to listen, and they lend an ear and set their minds on understanding it. This is the first astounding and amazing thing that becomes manifest with the manifestation of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Perfectly Enlightened One.

2(2) "People delight in conceit, take delight in conceit, rejoice in conceit. But when a Tathāgata is teaching the Dhamma for the removal of conceit, people wish to listen, and they lend an ear and set their minds on understanding it. This is the second astounding and amazing thing that becomes manifest with the manifestation of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Perfectly Enlightened One.

3(3) "People delight in excitement, [n.823] Anupasama. Lit., "lack of peace." take delight in excitement, rejoice in excitement. But when a Tathāgata is teaching the Dhamma that leads to peace, people wish to listen, and they lend an ear and set their minds on understanding it. This is the third astounding and amazing thing that becomes manifest with the manifestation of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Perfectly Enlightened One.

4(4) "People are immersed in ignorance, become like an egg, completely enveloped. [n.824] Avijjāgatā, bhikkhave, pajā aṇḍabhūtā pariyonaddhā. This is the reading in Ce and Be, but Ee has andhabhūtā, "become blind." The latter, at first glance, seems more likely to have been original, but the simile of the hen at AN8.11, IV 176,15–16 supports aṇḍabhūtā, "become an egg." Mp too accepts this reading with its gloss, "being enveloped by the shell of ignorance, it has become like an egg" (avijjaṇḍakosena pariyonaddhattā aṇḍaṁ viya bhūtā ti aṇḍabhūtā). But when a Tathāgata is teaching the Dhamma for the removal of ignorance, people wish to listen, and they lend an ear and set their minds on understanding it. This is the fourth astounding and amazing thing that becomes manifest with the manifestation of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Perfectly Enlightened One.

"These, bhikkhus, are the four astounding and amazing things that become manifest with the manifestation of a Tathāgata, an Arahant, a Perfectly Enlightened One."

1"Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa pātubhāvā cattāro acchariyā abbhutā dhammā pātubhavanti. Katame cattāro?

Ālayārāmā, bhikkhave, pajā ālayaratā ālayasammuditā; sā tathāgatena anālaye dhamme desiyamāne sussūsati sotaṁ odahati aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhapeti. Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa pātubhāvā ayaṁ paṭhamo acchariyo abbhuto dhammo pātubhavati.

2Mānārāmā, bhikkhave, pajā mānaratā mānasammuditā. Sā tathāgatena mānavinaye dhamme desiyamāne sussūsati sotaṁ odahati aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhapeti. Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa pātubhāvā ayaṁ dutiyo acchariyo abbhuto dhammo pātubhavati.

3Anupasamārāmā, bhikkhave, pajā anupasamaratā anupasamasammuditā. Sā tathāgatena opasamike dhamme desiyamāne sussūsati sotaṁ odahati aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhapeti. Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa pātubhāvā ayaṁ tatiyo acchariyo abbhuto dhammo pātubhavati.

4Avijjāgatā, bhikkhave, pajā aṇḍabhūtā pariyonaddhā. Sā tathāgatena avijjāvinaye dhamme desiyamāne sussūsati sotaṁ odahati aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhapeti. Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa pātubhāvā ayaṁ catuttho acchariyo abbhuto dhammo pātubhavati.

Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa pātubhāvā ime cattāro acchariyā abbhutā dhammā pātubhavantī"ti.
