119. Speech

1"Bhikkhus, possessing five qualities, a bhikkhunī is deposited in hell as if brought there. What five? (1) Without investigating and scrutinizing, she speaks praise of one who deserves dispraise. (2) Without investigating and scrutinizing, she speaks dispraise of one who deserves praise. (3) She is of wrong speech (4) and has wrong action. (5) She squanders gifts given out of faith. Possessing these five qualities, a bhikkhunī is deposited in hell as if brought there.

1"Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgatā bhikkhunī yathābhataṁ nikkhittā evaṁ niraye. Katamehi pañcahi? Ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā avaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā vaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, micchāvācā ca hoti, micchākammantā ca, saddhādeyyaṁ vinipāteti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgatā bhikkhunī yathābhataṁ nikkhittā evaṁ niraye.

2"Bhikkhus, possessing five other qualities, a bhikkhunī is deposited in heaven as if brought there. What five? (1) Having investigated and scrutinized, she speaks dispraise of one who deserves dispraise. (2) Having investigated and scrutinized, she speaks praise of one who deserves praise. (3) She is of right speech (4) and has right action. (5) She does not squander gifts given out of faith. Possessing these five qualities, a bhikkhunī is deposited in heaven as if brought there."

2Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgatā bhikkhunī yathābhataṁ nikkhittā evaṁ sagge. Katamehi pañcahi? Anuvicca pariyogāhetvā avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, anuvicca pariyogāhetvā vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, sammāvācā ca hoti, sammākammantā ca, saddhādeyyaṁ na vinipāteti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgatā bhikkhunī yathābhataṁ nikkhittā evaṁ sagge"ti.
