1"Bhikkhus, there are these five obstacles to rain that the forecasters do not know about, where their eyes do not tread. [n.1202] Ce and Be yattha nemittānaṁ cakkhu na kamati (Ee na kkhamati). The Pāli itself mixes metaphors. What five?
(1) "Bhikkhus, the heat element in the upper regions of the sky becomes disturbed. Because of this, the clouds that have arisen are scattered. This is the first obstacle to rain that the forecasters do not know about, where their eyes do not tread.
2(2) "Again, the air element in the upper regions of the sky becomes disturbed. Because of this, the clouds that have arisen are scattered. This is the second obstacle to rain ….
3(3) "Again, Rāhu the asura king receives the water with his hand and discards it into the ocean. This is the third obstacle to rain ….
4(4) "Again, the rain-cloud devas become heedless. This is the fourth obstacle to rain ….
5(5) "Again, human beings become unrighteous. This is the fifth obstacle to rain ….

1"Pañcime, bhikkhave, vassassa antarāyā, yaṁ nemittā na jānanti, yattha nemittānaṁ cakkhu na kamati. Katame pañca?
Upari, bhikkhave, ākāse tejodhātu pakuppati. Tena uppannā meghā paṭivigacchanti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo vassassa antarāyo, yaṁ nemittā na jānanti, yattha nemittānaṁ cakkhu na kamati.
2Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, upari ākāse vāyodhātu pakuppati. Tena uppannā meghā paṭivigacchanti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo vassassa antarāyo, yaṁ nemittā na jānanti, yattha nemittānaṁ cakkhu na kamati.
3Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, rāhu asurindo pāṇinā udakaṁ sampaṭicchitvā mahāsamudde chaḍḍeti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyo vassassa antarāyo, yaṁ nemittā na jānanti, yattha nemittānaṁ cakkhu na kamati.
4Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, vassavalāhakā devā pamattā honti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho vassassa antarāyo, yaṁ nemittā na jānanti, yattha nemittānaṁ cakkhu na kamati.
5Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, manussā adhammikā honti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo vassassa antarāyo, yaṁ nemittā na jānanti, yattha nemittānaṁ cakkhu na kamati.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca vassassa antarāyā, yaṁ nemittā na jānanti, yattha nemittānaṁ cakkhu na kamatī"ti.
