9: The Book of the Nines

1"Bhikkhus, for direct knowledge of lust, nine things are to be developed. What nine? The first jhāna, the second jhāna, the third jhāna, the fourth jhāna, the base of the infinity of space, the base of the infinity of consciousness, the base of nothingness, the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and the cessation of perception and feeling. For direct knowledge of lust, these nine things are to be developed."

1"Rāgassa, bhikkhave, abhiññāya nava dhammā bhāvetabbā. Katame nava? Paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ, dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ, tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ, catutthaṁ jhānaṁ, ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ, viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ, ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ, nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ, saññāvedayitanirodho – rāgassa, bhikkhave, abhiññāya ime nava dhammā bhāvetabbā"ti.
