Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "You should always give the Dharma, not give food. The reason is, you now have the support of karmic retribution, causing my disciples to respect the Dharma and not be greedy for material gain. If one is greedy for material gain, there is a great fault in the Tathāgata's place. Why is that? It means that sentient beings do not distinguish the Dharma, and they destroy the World-Honored One's teachings. Having destroyed the World-Honored One's teachings, they will not attain the path to nirvāṇa in the future, and I will then be ashamed. The reason is, it means that the Tathāgata's disciples are attached to material gain, do not practice the Dharma, do not distinguish the Dharma, destroy the World-Honored One's teachings, and do not follow the true Dharma. Having destroyed the World-Honored One's teachings, they will not attain the path to nirvāṇa. You bhikṣus should now remember the Dharma-giving, not think of giving out of desire. Then you will be praised, have much learning, be respected from afar, respect the Dharma, and not be greedy for wealth. This is without shame. The reason is, the Tathāgata's disciples give the good Dharma, not give out of desire. This is called, bhikṣus, you should remember the Dharma-giving, not study giving of wealth. You bhikṣus, I speak of this meaning, for what meaning do I speak of this condition?"

At that time, the bhikṣus addressed the World-Honored One, saying, "May the World-Honored One please explain this in detail."

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "Once there was a person who invited me for a meal. At that time, I had leftover Dharma that could be discarded. Two bhikṣus came from afar, their bodies exhausted and their complexions changed. I then told those bhikṣus, saying, 'There is leftover Dharma that can be discarded. If needed, you may take it and use it for yourself.' At that time, one bhikṣu thought, 'The World-Honored One has leftover Dharma that can be discarded today. If needed, it can be taken. If we do not take the food, it will be discarded on the pure ground or thrown into the water. Now we should take this food to fill our hunger and gain strength.' At that time, that bhikṣu further thought, 'The Buddha also said this: "One should practice Dharma-giving, not giving out of desire. The reason is, among all giving, none surpasses giving of wealth. However, Dharma-giving is the most supreme." I can now fast for a whole day and still sustain myself. I do not need to accept the merit of that offering.' At that time, that bhikṣu then gave up the idea of taking that offering. His body was exhausted and he did not care about his life.

"At that time, the second bhikṣu also thought, 'The World-Honored One also has leftover Dharma that can be discarded. If we do not take the food, we will be exhausted. Now we should use this food to fill our hunger and gain strength, so that we can be at ease day and night.' At that time, that bhikṣu then took the food and was at ease day and night, with sufficient strength and energy."

The Buddha told the bhikṣus, "Although that bhikṣu took that offering to remove hunger and gain strength, he was not as respectable, precious, and highly venerable as the previous bhikṣu. That bhikṣu's fame spread far and wide for a long time. He was content with the precepts and easy to fill. Bhikṣus should learn Dharma-giving, not giving out of desire. The reason I said that before is for this cause and condition."

At that time, the World-Honored One, having spoken these words, immediately rose from his seat and departed.

At that time, the many bhikṣus again thought: "The World-Honored One has just spoken briefly without elaborating, and then rose from his seat and entered the quiet room. Who among this assembly is able to explain the meaning of this brief teaching?" At that time, the many bhikṣus again thought: "The Venerable Śāriputra is praised by the World-Honored One. We should all go to him." At that time, the many bhikṣus went to the Venerable Śāriputra, paid homage to him, and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the many bhikṣus told Śāriputra everything they had heard from the World-Honored One.

At that time, the Venerable Śāriputra said to the bhikṣus: "How can the World-Honored One's disciples be attached to material gain and not practice the Dharma? How can the World-Honored One's disciples be attached to practicing the Dharma and not be attached to material gain?"

At that time, the many bhikṣus said to Śāriputra: "We have come from afar to ask about the meaning, so that we may practice it. Venerable Śāriputra, if you are able, please explain the meaning to us in detail."

Śāriputra said, "Listen carefully! Listen carefully! Consider it well, and I shall explain the meaning to you in detail."

At that time, the many bhikṣus replied, "Yes."

Śāriputra said, "The disciples of the World-Honored One learn tranquil mindfulness, but the disciples of the hearers do not learn in this way. The World-Honored One expounds the teachings to be eliminated, but the bhikṣus do not eliminate them. They are lazy and give rise to various confused thoughts. They do not practice what should be done and practice what should not be done. At that time, the venerable elder bhikṣus are ashamed in three places. What are the three? The World-Honored One always delights in tranquil places, but at that time the hearers do not learn in this way. The elder bhikṣus are ashamed. The World-Honored One teaches people to eliminate this Dharma, but the bhikṣus do not eliminate this Dharma. The elder bhikṣus are ashamed. They give rise to confused thoughts in this, and their minds are not focused. The elder bhikṣus are ashamed.

Venerable ones, you should know that the middle bhikṣus are ashamed in three places. What are the three? The World-Honored One always delights in tranquil places, but at that time the hearers do not learn in this way. The middle bhikṣus are ashamed. The World-Honored One teaches people to eliminate this Dharma, but those bhikṣus do not eliminate this Dharma. The middle bhikṣus are ashamed. They give rise to confused thoughts in this, and their minds are not focused. The middle bhikṣus are ashamed.

Venerable ones, you should know that the young bhikṣus are ashamed in three places. What are the three? The disciples of the World-Honored One always delight in tranquil places. At that time, the hearers do not learn in this way. The young bhikṣus are ashamed. The World-Honored One teaches people to eliminate this Dharma, but those bhikṣus do not eliminate this Dharma. The young bhikṣus are ashamed. They give rise to confused thoughts in this, and their minds are not focused. The young bhikṣus are ashamed. This is called, venerable ones, being attached to wealth and not being attached to the Dharma.

The bhikṣus said to Śāriputra, "How are bhikṣus attached to the Dharma and not attached to wealth?"

Śāriputra said, "In this way, bhikṣu! The World-Honored One delights in tranquil places, and the hearers also learn to delight in the tranquil places of the Tathāgata; the World-Honored One says to eliminate this Dharma, and the bhikṣus then eliminate this Dharma; they are not lazy, and they are not confused. They practice what should be practiced and do not practice what should not be practiced. Venerable ones, you should know that the elder bhikṣus have a reputation in three places. What are the three? The World-Honored One delights in tranquil places, and the hearers also delight in tranquil places. The elder bhikṣus then have a reputation. The World-Honored One teaches people to eliminate this Dharma, and at that time the bhikṣus then eliminate this Dharma. The elder bhikṣus then have a reputation. They do not give rise to confused thoughts in this, and their minds are always focused. The elder bhikṣus then have a reputation.

Venerable ones, you should know that the middle bhikṣus have a reputation in three places. What are the three? The World-Honored One delights in tranquil places, and the hearers also delight in tranquil places. The middle bhikṣus then have a reputation. The World-Honored One teaches people to eliminate this Dharma, and at that time the bhikṣus then eliminate this Dharma. The middle bhikṣus then have a reputation.

Venerable ones, you should know that the young bhikṣus have a reputation in three places. What are the three? In this way, bhikṣu! The World-Honored One delights in tranquil places, and the young bhikṣus also delight in tranquil places. The young bhikṣus then have a reputation. The World-Honored One teaches people to eliminate this Dharma, and at that time the bhikṣus then eliminate this Dharma. The young bhikṣus then have a reputation. "Venerable ones, you should know that greed is a disease, a great calamity. Anger is also like this. When greed and anger are eliminated, one attains the middle way, the eye of wisdom arises, all bonds are at rest, and one attains nirvāṇa. Stinginess is a disease, also extremely heavy, afflictions burn and cook, and arrogance is also deep. Deceit is not true, without shame or conscience, unable to let go of greed and desire, which destroys the right. Arrogance and excessive arrogance are also not let go of. When these two arrogances are eliminated, one attains the middle way, the eye of wisdom arises, all bonds are at rest, and one attains nirvāṇa."

The bhikṣu asked, "Venerable Śāriputra, what is the middle way, the arising of the eye of wisdom, the resting of all bonds, and the attainment of nirvāṇa?"

Śāriputra said, "Venerable ones, you should know that the eightfold noble path is the middle way. Namely, right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi. This is called, venerable ones, the middle way, the arising of the eye of wisdom, the resting of all bonds, and the attainment of nirvāṇa."

At that time, the many bhikṣus, having heard what was spoken by Venerable Śāriputra, joyfully received and practiced it.
