Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was in the Deer Park of the Sages in the country of Varanasi. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the bhikṣus, saying: "There are these two things that those who study the path should not be close to. What are the two things? Namely, attachment to desires and the Dharma of pleasure. This is a lowly and vulgar Dharma. Moreover, there are hundreds of kinds of suffering and afflictions. These are the two things that those who study the path should not be close to. Having abandoned these two things, I myself have the supreme path that leads to perfect enlightenment, the arising of the eye of wisdom, the resting of the mind, the attainment of the various supernatural powers, the accomplishment of the fruits of the śramaṇa, and the attainment of nirvāṇa. What is the supreme path that leads to perfect enlightenment, the arising of the eye of wisdom, the resting of the mind, the attainment of the various supernatural powers, the accomplishment of the fruits of the śramaṇa, and the attainment of nirvāṇa? Namely, this is the eightfold noble path of the sages. Namely, right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. This is called the supreme path. Now I have attained perfect enlightenment, the arising of the eye of wisdom, the resting of the mind, the attainment of the various supernatural powers, the accomplishment of the fruits of the śramaṇa, and the attainment of nirvāṇa. Thus, bhikṣus! You should study to abandon the two things above and practice the supreme path. Thus, bhikṣus! You should train in this way." |
At that time, the bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully received and upheld it. |
