26. To the Gulissānī (二六)瞿尼师经

I have heard thus:

我闻如是:

At one time, the Buddha was wandering in the city of Rājagṛha, staying in the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove.

一时,佛游王舍城,在竹林迦兰哆园。

At that time, the monk Guṇīśa was also wandering in Rājagṛha, in the Unoccupied Room, joking, arrogant, restless, and forgetful, his mind like a monkey. The monk Guṇīśa came to Rājagṛha for a small matter. At that time, Venerable Śāriputra was with a group of monks, after the midday meal, gathered in the lecture hall for a small matter. The monk Guṇīśa had finished what he was doing in Rājagṛha and went to the lecture hall.

尔时,瞿尼师比丘亦游王舍城,在无事室,调笑、憍慠,躁扰、喜忘,心如猕猴。瞿尼师比丘为少缘故,至王舍城,是时尊者舍梨子与比丘众俱,中食已后,因小事故,集在讲堂。瞿尼师比丘于王舍城所作已讫,往诣讲堂。

Venerable Śāriputra saw Guṇīśa coming from afar and, because of Guṇīśa, told the monks: "Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to respect and observe it. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned does not respect and observe it, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, does not respect and observe it, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to respect and observe it.

尊者舍梨子遥见瞿尼师来已,因瞿尼师告诸比丘:「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学敬重而随顺观。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,多不敬重,不随顺观者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,多不敬重,不随顺观,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学敬重,令随顺观。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn not to joke and be restless. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned often jokes and is restless, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, often jokes and is restless, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn not to joke and be restless.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学不调笑而不躁扰。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,多行调笑而躁扰者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,多行调笑及于躁扰,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学不调笑,令不躁扰。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn not to engage in animal-like discussions. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned often engages in animal-like discussions, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, often engages in animal-like discussions, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn not to engage in animal-like discussions.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学不畜生论。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,多畜生论者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,多畜生论,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学不畜生论。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn not to be arrogant and speak little. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned often acts arrogantly and speaks much, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, often acts arrogantly and speaks much, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn not to be arrogant and speak little.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学不憍慠及少言说。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,多行憍慠,多言说者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,多行憍慠及多言说,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学不憍慠及少言说。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to guard the sense faculties. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned often fails to guard the sense faculties, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, often fails to guard the sense faculties, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to guard the sense faculties.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学护诸根。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,多不护诸根者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,多不护诸根,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学护诸根。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to eat with moderation. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned greedily eats too much and is not content, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, greedily eats too much and is not content, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to eat with moderation.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学食知止足。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,贪余多食,不知足者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,贪余多食,不知止足,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学食知止足。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to be diligent and not lazy. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned often lacks diligence and is lazy, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, often lacks diligence and is lazy, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to be diligent and not lazy.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学精进而不懈怠。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,多不精进而懈怠者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,多不精进而反懈怠,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学精进而不懈怠。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to have right mindfulness and right wisdom. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned often lacks right mindfulness and right wisdom, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, often lacks right mindfulness and right wisdom, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to have right mindfulness and right wisdom.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学正念及正智也。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,多无正念,无正智者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,多无正念及无正智,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学正念及正智也。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to know the right time and be skillful in timing. He should not enter the village too early to beg for alms, nor should he leave too late. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned enters the village too early to beg for alms and leaves too late, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, enters the village too early to beg for alms and leaves too late, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to know the right time and be skillful in timing.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学知时及善时也。不早入村而行乞食,亦不晚出。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,早入村邑而行乞食,又晚出者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,早入村邑而行乞食,又复晚出,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学知时及善时也。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to know how to sit and be skillful in sitting. He should not force senior monks to sit and be criticized by junior monks. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned forces senior monks to sit and is criticized by junior monks, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, forces senior monks to sit and is criticized by junior monks, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to know how to sit and be skillful in sitting.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学知坐及] cf.[丽】善坐也,不逼长老坐,为小比丘诃。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,逼长老坐,为小比丘诃者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,逼长老坐,为小比丘诃,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学知坐及善坐也。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to discuss the Vinaya and Abhidharma together. Why? Virtuous ones! When a monk who practices the unconditioned is practicing the unconditioned, someone may come and ask about the Vinaya and Abhidharma. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned does not know how to answer questions about the Vinaya and Abhidharma, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, does not know how to answer questions about the Vinaya and Abhidharma, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to discuss the Vinaya and Abhidharma together.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学共论律、阿毘昙。何以故?诸贤!无事比丘行于无事时,或有来问律、阿毘昙。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,不知答律、阿毘昙者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,不知答律及阿毘昙,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学共论律、阿毘昙。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to discuss the liberation of the breath, the formless attainments, and the transcendence of form together. Why? Virtuous ones! When a monk who practices the unconditioned is practicing the unconditioned, someone may come and ask about the liberation of the breath, the formless attainments, and the transcendence of form. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned does not know how to answer questions about the liberation of the breath, the formless attainments, and the transcendence of form, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, does not know how to answer questions about the liberation of the breath, the formless attainments, and the transcendence of form, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to discuss the liberation of the breath, the formless attainments, and the transcendence of form together.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学共论息解脱,离色至无色定。何以故?诸贤!无事比丘行于无事时,或有来问息解脱,离色至无色定。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,不知答息解脱,离色至无色定者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,不知答息解脱,离色至无色定,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学共论息解脱,离色至无色定。

Virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to discuss the knowledge and vision of the cessation of the contaminants together. Why? Virtuous ones! When a monk who practices the unconditioned is practicing the unconditioned, someone may come and ask about the knowledge and vision of the cessation of the contaminants. Virtuous ones! If a monk who practices the unconditioned does not know how to answer questions about the knowledge and vision of the cessation of the contaminants, he will be criticized and questioned by the monks: 'Why does this virtuous one practice the unconditioned? Because this virtuous one, practicing the unconditioned, does not know how to answer questions about the knowledge and vision of the cessation of the contaminants, he will also be criticized and questioned by the monks when he comes to the assembly.' Therefore, virtuous ones! A monk who practices the unconditioned should learn to discuss the knowledge and vision of the cessation of the contaminants together.

「诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学共论漏尽智通。何以故?诸贤!无事比丘行于无事时,或有来问漏尽智通。诸贤!若无事比丘行于无事,而不知答漏尽智通者,则致比丘诃数诘责:『此贤无事,何为行无事?所以者何?此贤无事,行于无事,而不知答漏尽智通,若至众中,亦致比丘诃数诘责。』是故,诸贤!无事比丘行于无事,当学共论漏尽智通。」

At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was also in the assembly. Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said, "Venerable Śāriputra! Is it only monks who practice the unconditioned who should learn these teachings, and not monks in the human realm?"

是时,尊者大目揵连亦在众中,尊者大目干连白曰:「尊者舍梨子!但无事比丘行于无事,应学如是法,非谓人间比丘耶?」

Venerable Śāriputra replied, "Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana! Monks who practice the unconditioned should learn these teachings, let alone monks in the human realm."

尊者舍梨子答曰:「尊者大目干连!无事比丘行于无事,尚学如是法,况复人间比丘耶?」

The two Venerables praised each other's words as excellent. Having heard their discussion, they rose from their seats and departed.

如是二尊更相称说,赞叹善哉,闻所说已,从座起去。

Respect, no frivolous laughter, not like animals, arrogant, guarding the sense faculties, knowing moderation in eating
diligence, right mindfulness and wisdom, knowing the right time, also sitting well, discussing the Vinaya, Abhidharma
and liberation through cessation, and the knowledge of the exhaustion of taints are also like this.

敬重、无调笑  不畜生论、慠护根、食知足  精进、正念智知时、亦善坐  论律阿毘昙及说息解脱漏尽通亦然
