Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
Thus have I heard: | 一时，佛住王舍城迦兰陀竹园。时，有众多比丘集于食堂，作如是论：「波斯匿王、频婆娑罗王，何者大力？何者大富？」 |
At that time, the World-Honored One, while in meditation, heard the discussion of the bhikṣus with his divine ear. He then rose from his seat, went to the dining hall, spread his sitting mat in front of the assembly, and sat down. He asked the bhikṣus: "What were you discussing?" | 尔时，世尊于禅定中，以天耳闻诸比丘论说之声，即从座起，往诣食堂，敷坐具于众前坐，问诸比丘：「汝等何所论说？」 |
The bhikṣus then reported the above matter in detail to the World-Honored One. | 时，诸比丘即以上事具白世尊。 |
The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Why do you discuss the great power and great wealth of the kings? Bhikṣus, do not have such discussions. Why is that? This is not beneficial in meaning, not beneficial in Dharma, not beneficial in the holy life, not wisdom, not right awakening, and does not lead to nirvāṇa. You should discuss: 'This is the noble truth of suffering, the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering.' Why is that? These four noble truths are beneficial in meaning, beneficial in Dharma, beneficial in the holy life, right wisdom, right awakening, and lead to nirvāṇa. Therefore, bhikṣus, for those who have not yet attained the four noble truths without interruption, they should diligently cultivate superior aspiration and study without interruption." | 佛告比丘：「汝等用说诸王大力、大富为？汝等比丘莫作是论。所以者何？此非义饶益，非法饶益，非梵行饶益，非智、非正觉，不向涅槃。汝等当说：『此苦圣谛、苦集圣谛、苦灭圣谛、苦灭道迹圣谛。』所以者何？此四圣谛是义饶益、法饶益、梵行饶益、正智、正觉、正向涅槃。是故，比丘！于四圣谛未无间等者，当勤方便，起增上欲，学无间等。」 |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said and joyfully practiced it. | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
