SN22:31 The Root of Misery

1At Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, I will teach you misery[n.44] Agha, glossed dukkha by Spk. and the root of misery. Listen to that …

1Sāvatthinidānaṁ. "Aghañca, bhikkhave, desessāmi aghamūlañca. Taṁ suṇātha.

"And what, bhikkhus, is misery? Form is misery; feeling is misery; perception is misery; volitional formations are misery; consciousness is misery. This is called misery.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, aghaṁ? Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, aghaṁ, vedanā aghaṁ, saññā aghaṁ, saṅkhārā aghaṁ, viññāṇaṁ aghaṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, aghaṁ.

"And what, bhikkhus, is the root of misery? It is this craving that leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, seeking delight here and there; that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for extermination. This is called the root of misery."

Katamañca, bhikkhave, aghamūlaṁ? Yāyaṁ taṇhā ponobhavikā nandīrāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī; seyyathidaṁ – kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, aghamūlan"ti.
