Saṁyutta Nikāya — The Connected Discourses

SN46: Connected Discourses on the Factors of Enlightenment

SN46:44 Unwise

1Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One … and said to him:

1Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami … pe … ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

"Venerable sir, it is said, ‘an unwise dolt, an unwise dolt.’ In what way, venerable sir, is one called ‘an unwise dolt’?"

"‘Duppañño eḷamūgo, duppañño eḷamūgo’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ‘duppañño eḷamūgo’ti vuccatī"ti?

"Bhikkhus, it is because one has not developed and cultivated the seven factors of enlightenment that one is called ‘an unwise dolt.’ sn.v.100 What seven? The enlightenment factor of mindfulness … the enlightenment factor of equanimity. It is because one has not developed and cultivated these seven factors of enlightenment that one is called ‘an unwise dolt.’"

"Sattannaṁ kho, bhikkhu, bojjhaṅgānaṁ abhāvitattā abahulīkatattā ‘duppañño eḷamūgo’ti vuccati. Katamesaṁ sattannaṁ? Satisambojjhaṅgassa … pe … upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa – imesaṁ kho, bhikkhu, sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ abhāvitattā abahulīkatattā ‘duppañño eḷamūgo’ti vuccatī"ti.

Catutthaṁ.
