Saṁyutta Nikāya — The Connected Discourses

SN47: Connected Discourses on the Establishments of Mindfulness

SN47:50 Taints

1"Bhikkhus, there are these three taints. What three? The taint of sensuality, the taint of existence, the taint of ignorance. sn.v.190 These are the three taints. The four establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for the full understanding of these three taints.

1"Tayome, bhikkhave āsavā. Katame tayo? Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavo – ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavā. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tiṇṇannaṁ āsavānaṁ pahānāya cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā.

2"What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body … feelings in feelings … mind in mind … phenomena in phenomena, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world.

2Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī vihārati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu … pe … citte … pe … dhammesu dhammānupassī vihārati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

"These four establishments of mindfulness, bhikkhus, are to be developed for the full understanding of these three taints."
