Saṁyutta Nikāya — The Connected Discourses

SN48: Connected Discourses on the Faculties

SN48:19 Equipped

1Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said to him:

1Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

2"Venerable sir, it is said, ‘one equipped with faculties, one equipped with faculties.’[n.203] See SN35.154. In what way, venerable sir, is one equipped with faculties?" sn.v.203

2"‘Indriyasampanno, indriyasampanno’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, indriyasampanno hotī"ti?

"Here, bhikkhu, a bhikkhu develops the faculty of faith, which leads to peace, leads to enlightenment. He develops the faculty of energy … the faculty of mindfulness … the faculty of concentration … the faculty of wisdom, which leads to peace, leads to enlightenment.

"Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu saddhindriyaṁ bhāveti upasamagāmiṁ sambodhagāmiṁ, vīriyindriyaṁ bhāveti upasamagāmiṁ sambodhagāmiṁ, satindriyaṁ bhāveti upasamagāmiṁ sambodhagāmiṁ, samādhindriyaṁ bhāveti upasamagāmiṁ sambodhagāmiṁ, paññindriyaṁ bhāveti upasamagāmiṁ sambodhagāmiṁ.

"It is in this way, bhikkhu, that one is equipped with faculties."

Ettāvatā kho, bhikkhu, bhikkhu indriyasampanno hotī"ti.

Navamaṁ.
