Saṁyutta Nikāya — The Connected Discourses

SN48: Connected Discourses on the Faculties

SN48:49 Piṇḍola

1Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Kosambi in Ghosita's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Piṇḍola Bharadvaja had declared final knowledge thus: "I understand: Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being."

1Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ vihārati ghositārāme. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmatā piṇḍolabhāradvājena aññā byākatā hoti: "khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānāmī"ti.

Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said to him:

Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ:

2"Venerable sir, the Venerable Piṇḍola Bharadvaja has declared final knowledge thus: ‘I understand: Destroyed is birth….’ Considering what reason has the Venerable Piṇḍola Bharadvaja declared final knowledge thus?"

2"Āyasmatā, bhante, piṇḍolabhāradvājena aññā byākatā: ‘khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāmīti. Kiṁ nu kho, bhante, atthavasaṁ sampassamānena āyasmatā piṇḍolabhāradvājena aññā byākatā: ‘khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāmī"ti?

3"It is, bhikkhus, because he has developed and cultivated three faculties that the bhikkhu Piṇḍola Bharadvaja has declared final knowledge thus. What are those three? The faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom. It is because he has developed and cultivated these three faculties that the bhikkhu Piṇḍola Bharadvaja has declared final knowledge thus.

3"Tiṇṇannaṁ kho, bhikkhave, indriyānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā piṇḍolabhāradvājena bhikkhunā aññā byākatā: ‘khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāmīti. Katamesaṁ tiṇṇannaṁ? Satindriyassa, samādhindriyassa, paññindriyassa – imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tiṇṇannaṁ indriyānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā piṇḍolabhāradvājena bhikkhunā aññā byākatā: ‘khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāmīti.

"In what, bhikkhus, do these three faculties end? They end in destruction. End in the destruction of what? Of birth, aging, and death. Considering that they end in the destruction of birth, aging, and death,[n.233] Be and Ee read jātijarāmaraṇaṁ khayan ti kho; Se has jātijarāmaraṇaṁ khayantaṁ kho. The line would make better sense if we read jātijarāmaraṇassa khayantani kho. sn.v.225 the bhikkhu Piṇḍola Bharadvaja has declared final knowledge thus: ‘I understand: Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being.’"

Imāni ca, bhikkhave, tīṇindriyāni kimantāni? Khayantāni. Kissa khayantāni? Jātijarāmaraṇassa. ‘Jātijarāmaraṇaṁ khayan’ti kho, bhikkhave, sampassamānena piṇḍolabhāradvājena bhikkhunā aññā byākatā: ‘khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāmī"ti.

Navamaṁ.
