SN2: Connected Discourses with Young Devas

SN2:28 Nandivisala

1Standing to one side, the young deva Nandivisala addressed the Blessed One in verse:

2v.361 "Having four wheels and nine doors,
Filled up and bound with greed,
Born from a bog, O great hero!
How does one escape from it?"

3v.362 "Having cut the thong and the strap,
Having cut off evil desire and greed,
Having drawn out craving with its root:
Thus one escapes from it."

1Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho nandivisālo devaputto bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

2"Catucakkaṁ navadvāraṁ,
puṇṇaṁ lobhena saṁyutaṁ;
Paṅkajātaṁ mahāvīra,
kathaṁ yātrā bhavissatī"ti.

3"Chetvā naddhiṁ varattañca,
icchālobhañca pāpakaṁ;
Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha,
evaṁ yātrā bhavissatī"ti.
