1On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrel Sanctuary. The brahmin Bilangika Bharadvaja heard: [n.439] Spk: He was another of the Bharadvaja brothers. The name Bilangika was assigned to him by the redactors because he became rich by selling delicious conjee (kañjika, a synonym for bilaṅga). "It is said that the brahmin of the Bharadvaja clan has gone forth from the household life into homelessness under the ascetic Gotama." Angry and displeased, he approached the Blessed One and silently stood to one side. [n.440] Spk: He was so angry his three brothers had been ordained as monks that he could not speak.

Then the Blessed One, having known with his own mind the reflection in the brahmin Bilangika Bharadvaja's mind, addressed him in verse:

3When this was said, the brahmin Bilangika Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: "Magnificent, Master Gotama! … " And the Venerable Bharadvaja became one of the arahants.

1Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe vihārati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. Assosi kho bilaṅgikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo: "bhāradvājagotto kira brāhmaṇo samaṇassa gotamassa santike agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito"ti kupito anattamano yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā tuṇhībhūto ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

Atha kho bhagavā bilaṅgikassa bhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya bilaṅgikaṁ bhāradvājaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

3Evaṁ vutte, bilaṅgikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: "Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama … pe … abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.
