CūḷakammavibhaṅgasuttaThe Shorter Analysis of Action

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
evaṁ me → evamme (th) | evaṁ → evam (pts)
I have heard
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane, anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Atha kho subho māṇavo todeyyaputto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
tenupasaṅkami upasaṅkamitvā → ten upasaṁkami upasaṁkamitvā (pts)
Then Subha the student, Todeyya’s son, went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, exchanged courteous greetings with him.
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho subho māṇavo todeyyaputto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
sāraṇīyaṁ → sārāṇīyaṁ (bj, sya-all, pts) | etadavoca → etad avoca (pts)
After an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, he sat to one side. As he was sitting there, he said to the Blessed One:

“Ko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo yena manussānaṁyeva sataṁ manussabhūtānaṁ dissanti hīnappaṇītatā?
dissanti → dissati (sya-all, pts) | manussānaṁyeva → manussānaṁ yeva (pts)
“Master Gotama, what is the reason, what is the cause, why baseness & excellence are seen among human beings, among the human race?
Dissanti hi, bho gotama, manussā appāyukā, dissanti dīghāyukā;
hi → (sya-all) | hi → Si omits. (pts note)
For short-lived & long-lived people are to be seen,
dissanti bavhābādhā, dissanti appābādhā;
bavhābādhā → bahvābādhā (sya-all, km, mr) | bavhābādhā → bahvābādhā (cck: syā. kaṁ. ka.) | bavhābādhā → Si bahv., here et infra. Si appapaññā. (pts note)
sickly & healthy,
dissanti dubbaṇṇā, dissanti vaṇṇavanto;ugly & beautiful, dissanti appesakkhā, dissanti mahesakkhā;uninfluential & influential, dissanti appabhogā, dissanti mahābhogā;poor & rich, dissanti nīcakulīnā, dissanti uccākulīnā;
nīcakulīnā → nīcākulīnā (sya-all, pts)
low-born & high-born,
dissanti duppaññā, dissanti paññavanto.
paññavanto → paññāvanto (bj, pts1ed) | duppaññā → appapaññā (sya-all) | paññavanto → paññāvanto (pts) | paññavanto → paññāvanto (cck: sī. pī.) | paññāvanto → Si paññav. (pts note)
stupid & discerning people are to be seen.
Ko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo yena manussānaṁyeva sataṁ manussabhūtānaṁ dissanti hīnappaṇītatā”ti?
dissanti → dissati (sya-all) | dissanti hīnappaṇītatāti → dissati hīnappaṇītatā ti (pts) | manussānaṁyeva → manussānaṁ yeva (bjt, pts)
So what is the reason, what is the cause, why baseness & excellence are seen among human beings, among the human race?”

“Kammassakā, māṇava, sattā kammadāyādā kammayonī kammabandhū kammappaṭisaraṇā.
kammayonī kammabandhū → kammayoni kammabandhu (bj) | kammabandhū → kammayoni kammabandhu (cck: sī.) | kammappaṭisaraṇā → kammapaṭisaraṇā (th, pts)
“Student, beings are owners of their actions, heirs of their actions, born of their actions, related through their actions, and have their actions as their arbitrator.
Kammaṁ satte vibhajati yadidaṁ—Action is what differentiates beings in terms of hīnappaṇītatāyā”ti.baseness & excellence.”

“Na kho ahaṁ imassa bhoto gotamassa saṅkhittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaṁ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāmi.
ājānāmi → ājānami (pts) | saṅkhittena → saṁkhittena (my, bjt, ms2005, pts)
“I don’t understand the detailed meaning of Master Gotama’s statement spoken in brief without explaining the detailed meaning.
Sādhu me bhavaṁ gotamo tathā dhammaṁ desetu yathā ahaṁ imassa bhoto gotamassa saṅkhittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaṁ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṁ ājāneyyan”ti.

It would be good if Master Gotama taught me the Dhamma so that I might understand the detailed meaning of his brief statement.”

“Tena hi, māṇava, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.
manasi karohi → manasikarohi (bjt, th, pts) | tena hi → tenahi (th)
“In that case, student, listen & pay close attention. I will speak.”

“Evaṁ, bho”ti kho subho māṇavo todeyyaputto bhagavato paccassosi.
bhoti → bho ti (pts)
“As you say, Master Gotama,” Subha the student responded to the Blessed One.
Bhagavā etadavoca:

The Blessed One said:
