AkitticariyaAkitti’s Conduct

Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa.Homage to him, the blessed one, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha!

“Kappe ca satasahasse, caturo ca asaṅkhiye;“For a hundred thousand eons and four incalculable ages, Etthantare yaṁ caritaṁ, sabbaṁ taṁ bodhipācanaṁ.all my conduct in that period ripens in awakening.

Atītakappe caritaṁ, ṭhapayitvā bhavābhave;Setting aside my conduct in past eons through different lives, Imamhi kappe caritaṁ, pavakkhissaṁ suṇohi me.I shall speak of my conduct in this eon, hear me.

Yadā ahaṁ brahāraññe, suññe vipinakānane; When I lived having plunged into the formidable jungle Ajjhogāhetvā viharāmi, akitti nāma tāpaso.
Ajjhogāhetvā → ajjhogahetvā (bj, sya1ed, sya2ed, pts-vp-pli2)
of empty thickets and glades, my name was Akitti the mortifier.

Tadā maṁ tapatejena, santatto tidivābhibhū;Then, burned by the fires of my mortification, the sovereign of the Third Heaven, Dhārento brāhmaṇavaṇṇaṁ, bhikkhāya maṁ upāgami.came to me for alms in the form of a brahmin.

Pavanā ābhataṁ paṇṇaṁ, atelañca aloṇikaṁ;I had gathered leaves from the forest without oil or salt, Mama dvāre ṭhitaṁ disvā, sakaṭāhena ākiriṁ.and seeing him standing at my door, I placed them in his pot.

Tassa datvānahaṁ paṇṇaṁ, nikkujjitvāna bhājanaṁ;After giving him the leaves I turned over my plate, Punesanaṁ jahitvāna, pāvisiṁ paṇṇasālakaṁ.and having given up on seeking more food, I entered my hut of leaves.

Dutiyampi tatiyampi, upagañchi mamantikaṁ;A second and a third time he came to me. Akampito anolaggo, evamevamadāsahaṁ.Undisturbed, ungrasping, I gave in just the same way.

Na me tappaccayā atthi, sarīrasmiṁ vivaṇṇiyaṁ;That is the reason why my body is not discolored. Pītisukhena ratiyā, vītināmemi taṁ divaṁ.In rapture and bliss free of relishing I spend the day.

Yadi māsampi dvemāsaṁ, dakkhiṇeyyaṁ varaṁ labhe; If even for a month or two I were to find a worthy recipient, Akampito anolīno, dadeyyaṁ dānamuttamaṁ.undisturbed, unattached, I would give the supreme gift.

Na tassa dānaṁ dadamāno, yasaṁ lābhañca patthayiṁ;While giving him that gift I did not wish for fame or profit. Sabbaññutaṁ patthayāno, tāni kammāni ācarin”ti.Wishing for omniscience I performed those deeds.”

Akitticariyaṁ paṭhamaṁ.
