“Punāparaṁ yadā homi, nagare brahmavaḍḍhane;“Then again when I was in the city of Brahmavaḍḍhana, Tattha kulavare seṭṭhe, mahāsāle ajāyahaṁ.I was reborn there in a fine, wealthy, and eminent family.

Tadāpi lokaṁ disvāna, andhībhūtaṁ tamotthaṭaṁ;Even so, I saw that the world had become blind, smothered in darkness. Cittaṁ bhavato patikuṭati, tuttavegahataṁ viya.My mind recoiled from rebirth, as if harshly pricked by a goad.

Disvāna vividhaṁ pāpaṁ, evaṁ cintesahaṁ tadā;Seeing the many forms of wickedness, I thought to myself: ‘Kadāhaṁ gehā nikkhamma, pavisissāmi kānanaṁ’.‘When shall I leave the house and enter the forest?’

Tadāpi maṁ nimantesuṁ, kāmabhogehi ñātayo; Then too my relatives invited me to enjoy the pleasures of the senses. Tesampi chandamācikkhiṁ, ‘mā nimantetha tehi maṁ’.I told them of my desire, saying, ‘Do not invite me to such things!’

Yo me kaniṭṭhako bhātā, nando nāmāsi paṇḍito; My younger brother, who was named Nanda the astute, Sopi maṁ anusikkhanto, pabbajjaṁ samarocayi.followed my ethical practices, and chose to go forth.

Ahaṁ soṇo ca nando ca, ubho mātāpitā mama;I, Soṇa, and Nanda, and both my mother and father, Tadāpi bhoge chaḍḍetvā, pāvisimhā mahāvanan”ti.then discarded our riches and entered the great forest.”
