“Susāne seyyaṁ kappemi, chavaṭṭhikaṁ upanidhāyahaṁ;“I made my bed in a charnel ground, resting on a skeleton. Gāmaṇḍalā upāgantvā, rūpaṁ dassentinappakaṁ.
Gāmaṇḍalā → gomaṇḍalā (bj, pts-vp-pli2); gāmamaṇḍalā (sya1ed, sya2ed)Village louts came up and mocked me in all sorts of ways.

Apare gandhamālañca, bhojanaṁ vividhaṁ bahuṁ;Others brought me incense and flowers, Upāyanānūpanenti, haṭṭhā saṁviggamānasā.and many kinds of cooked food, all thrilled, their minds elated.

Ye me dukkhaṁ upaharanti, ye ca denti sukhaṁ mama;Those who brought me pain, and those who gave me happiness, Sabbesaṁ samako homi, dayā kopo na vijjati.were all the same to me. I felt no favor or anger.

Sukhadukkhe tulābhūto, yasesu ayasesu ca;I became balanced toward pleasure and pain, fame and disgrace. Sabbattha samako homi, esā me upekkhāpāramī”ti.I was equal in every case: this is my perfection of equanimity.”

Mahālomahaṁsacariyaṁ pannarasamaṁ.

Tassuddānaṁ

Yudhañjayo somanasso, ayogharabhisena ca; Soṇanando mūgapakkho, kapirājā saccasavhayo.

Vaṭṭako maccharājā ca, kaṇhadīpāyano isi; Sutasomo puna āsiṁ, sāmo ca ekarājahu;

Evaṁ bahubbidhaṁ dukkhaṁ, sampattī ca bahubbidhā;

Datvā dātabbakaṁ dānaṁ, sīlaṁ pūretvā asesato;I gave what could be given, and fulfilled ethics without reserve. Nekkhamme pāramiṁ gantvā, patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.Having won the perfection of renunciation, I realized supreme awakening.

Paṇḍite paripucchitvā, vīriyaṁ katvāna muttamaṁ;I inquired of the astute, and put forth highest effort, Khantiyā pāramiṁ gantvā, patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.having won the perfection of acceptance, I realized supreme awakening.

Katvā daḷhamadhiṭṭhānaṁ, saccavācānurakkhiya;Having made a firm resolve, and guarded truthful speech, Mettāya pāramiṁ gantvā, patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.having won the perfection of love, I realized supreme awakening.

Lābhālābhe yasāyase, sammānanāvamānane;In gain and loss, fame and disgrace, respect and contempt, Sabbattha samako hutvā, patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.having become equal in every case, I realized supreme awakening.

Kosajjaṁ bhayato disvā, vīriyārambhañca khemato;Seeing laziness as fearful, and energy as a sanctuary, Āraddhavīriyā hotha, esā buddhānusāsanī.rouse up energy: this is the Buddhas’ instruction!

Vivādaṁ bhayato disvā, avivādañca khemato;Seeing dispute as fearful, and harmony as a sanctuary, Samaggā sakhilā hotha, esā buddhānusāsanī.be harmonious and courteous: this is the Buddhas’ instruction!

Pamādaṁ bhayato disvā, appamādañca khemato;Seeing negligence as fearful, and diligence as a sanctuary, Bhāvethaṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ, esā buddhānusāsanī.develop the eightfold path: this is the Buddhas’ instruction!

Itthaṁ sudaṁ bhagavā attano pubbacariyaṁ sambhāvayamāno buddhāpadāniyaṁ nāma dhammapariyāyaṁ abhāsitthāti.That is how the Buddha, illustrating his own conduct in past lives, spoke the exposition of the teaching named the “Legends of the Buddha”.

Cariyāpiṭakaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.
