Atapanīyasutta

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:

“Dveme, bhikkhave, dhammā atapanīyā.“Monks, there are these two things that cause no remorse. Katame dve?Which two? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco katakalyāṇo hoti, katakusalo, katabhīruttāṇo, akatapāpo, akataluddo, akatakibbiso. There is the case of the person who has done what is admirable, has done what is skillful, has given protection to those in fear, and has done nothing that is evil, savage, or cruel. So ‘kataṁ me kalyāṇan’tipi na tappati, ‘akataṁ me pāpan’tipi na tappati.Thinking, ‘I have done what is admirable,’ he feels no remorse. Thinking, ‘I have not done what is evil,’ he feels no remorse. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā atapanīyā”ti.These are the two things that cause no remorse.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Kāyaduccaritaṁ hitvā, vacīduccaritāni ca;Having abandoned bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, Manoduccaritaṁ hitvā, yañcaññaṁ dosasañhitaṁ.misconduct of mind, & whatever else is flawed,

Akatvākusalaṁ kammaṁ, katvāna kusalaṁ bahuṁ;not having done what’s not skillful, having done much that is, Kāyassa bhedā sappañño, saggaṁ so upapajjatī”ti.at the break-up of the body, the discerning one reappears in heaven.

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Catutthaṁ.
