Devadattasutta

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:

“Tīhi, bhikkhave, asaddhammehi abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho.“Monks, conquered by three forms of false Dhamma–his mind overwhelmed– Devadatta is incurably doomed to deprivation, to hell, for an eon. Katamehi tīhi?Which three? Pāpicchatāya, bhikkhave, abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho.Conquered by evil desires–his mind overwhelmed– Devadatta is incurably doomed to deprivation, to hell, for the duration of an eon. Pāpamittatāya, bhikkhave, abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho.Conquered by friendship with evil people–his mind overwhelmed– Devadatta is incurably doomed to deprivation, to hell, for the duration of an eon. Sati kho pana uttarikaraṇīye oramattakena visesādhigamena antarā vosānaṁ āpādi.
uttarikaraṇīye → uttariṁ karaṇīye (sya-all) | visesādhigamena → visesādhigamena ca (sya-all, pts-vp-pli1)And, there being something further to be done, he nevertheless stopped halfway with a lower modicum of distinctive attainment. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, tīhi asaddhammehi abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto devadatto āpāyiko nerayiko kappaṭṭho atekiccho”ti.Conquered by these three forms of false Dhamma–his mind overwhelmed– Devadatta is incurably doomed to deprivation, to hell, for an eon.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Mā jātu koci lokasmiṁ, pāpiccho udapajjatha;May no one in the world ever be reborn with evil desire. Tadamināpi jānātha, pāpicchānaṁ yathā gati.Know that through that evil desire, his destination’s that of all who have evil desires. I’ve heard how Devadatta,

Paṇḍitoti samaññāto, bhāvitattoti sammato;–regarded as wise, composed, Jalaṁva yasasā aṭṭhā, devadattoti vissuto.
vissuto → me sutaṁ (sya-all, pts-vp-pli1)incandescent with honor–

So samānamanuciṇṇo, āsajja naṁ tathāgataṁ;
samānamanuciṇṇo → pamāṇamanuciṇṇo (bj, csp1ed); pamādamanuciṇṇo (si, sya-all)in the thrall of heedlessness assaulted the Tathāgata Avīcinirayaṁ patto, catudvāraṁ bhayānakaṁ.and fell to the four-gated, fearful place: avīci, unmitigated hell.

Aduṭṭhassa hi yo dubbhe, pāpakammaṁ akubbato;Whoever plots against one free of corruption who’s done no evil deed: Tameva pāpaṁ phusati, duṭṭhacittaṁ anādaraṁ.
phusati → phusseti (sya-all, pts-vp-pli1)that evil touches him himself, corrupted in mind, disrespectful.

Samuddaṁ visakumbhena, yo maññeyya padūsituṁ;Whoever might think of polluting the ocean with a pot of poison, Na so tena padūseyya, bhesmā hi udadhi mahā.couldn’t succeed, for the mass of water is great.

Evamevaṁ tathāgataṁ, yo vādena vihiṁsati;
Evamevaṁ → evameva (bj); evametaṁ (sya-all, pts-vp-pli1)So it is when anyone attacks with abuse the Tathāgata Sammaggataṁ santacittaṁ, vādo tamhi na rūhati.
Sammaggataṁ → samaggataṁ (bj, mr)–rightly-gone, of peaceful mind– for abuse doesn’t grow on him.

Tādisaṁ mittaṁ kubbetha, tañca seveyya paṇḍito;A wise person should make friends, should associate, with a person like him– Yassa maggānugo bhikkhu, khayaṁ dukkhassa pāpuṇe”ti.whose path a monk can pursue and reach the ending of suffering & stress.
