Paduṭṭhacittasutta

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:

“Idhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ paduṭṭhacittaṁ evaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi:“Monks, there is the case where a certain person is corrupt-minded. Having encompassed that mind with [my] awareness, I discern, ‘imamhi cāyaṁ samaye puggalo kālaṁ kareyya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye’.‘If this person were to die at this instant, then as if he were to be carried off, he would thus be placed in hell.’ Taṁ kissa hetu? Why is that? Cittaṁ hissa, bhikkhave, paduṭṭhaṁ.Because his mind is corrupt. Cetopadosahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjantī”ti.It’s because of corrupt-mindedness that there are cases where beings–at the break-up of the body, after death–reappear in a plane of deprivation, a bad destination, a lower realm, hell.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Paduṭṭhacittaṁ ñatvāna, ekaccaṁ idha puggalaṁ;Knowing the case of a corrupt-minded person, Etamatthañca byākāsi, buddho bhikkhūna santike.the One Awakened explained its meaning in the presence of the monks.

Imamhi cāyaṁ samaye, kālaṁ kayirātha puggalo; If that person were to die at this instant, Nirayaṁ upapajjeyya, cittaṁ hissa padūsitaṁ.he’d reappear in hell because his mind is corrupt–

Yathā haritvā nikkhipeyya, evamevaṁ tathāvidho;as if he were carried off and placed there. Cetopadosahetu hi, sattā gacchanti duggatin”ti.It’s because of corrupt-mindedness that beings go to a bad destination.
