Mettasutta

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:

“Mā, bhikkhave, puññānaṁ bhāyittha.“Monks, don’t be afraid of acts of merit. Sukhassetaṁ, bhikkhave, adhivacanaṁ iṭṭhassa kantassa piyassa manāpassa yadidaṁ puññāni.This is a synonym for what is blissful, desirable, pleasing, endearing, charming–i.e., acts of merit. Abhijānāmi kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, dīgharattaṁ katānaṁ puññānaṁ iṭṭhaṁ kantaṁ piyaṁ manāpaṁ vipākaṁ paccanubhūtaṁ.I directly know that, having long performed meritorious deeds, I long experienced desirable, pleasing, endearing, charming results. Satta vassāni mettacittaṁ bhāvetvā satta saṁvaṭṭavivaṭṭakappe nayimaṁ lokaṁ punarāgamāsiṁ.Having developed a mind of good will for seven years, then for seven eons of contraction & expansion I didn’t return to this world. Saṁvaṭṭamāne sudaṁ, bhikkhave, kappe ābhassarūpago homi;Whenever the eon was contracting, I entered the [realm of] Radiance. vivaṭṭamāne kappe suññaṁ brahmavimānaṁ upapajjāmi.Whenever the eon was expanding, I reappeared in an empty Brahma-abode.

Tatra sudaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmā homi mahābrahmā abhibhū anabhibhūto aññadatthudaso vasavattī.There I was Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Unconquered Conqueror, Total Seer, Wielder of Power. Chattiṁsakkhattuṁ kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sakko ahosiṁ devānamindo;Then for thirty-six times I was Sakka, ruler of the gods. anekasatakkhattuṁ rājā ahosiṁ cakkavattī dhammiko dhammarājā cāturanto vijitāvī janapadatthāvariyappatto sattaratanasamannāgato.For many hundreds of times I was a king, a wheel-turning emperor, a righteous king of Dhamma, conqueror of the four corners of the earth, maintaining stable control over the countryside, endowed with the seven treasures –to say nothing of the times I was a local king. Ko pana vādo padesarajjassa.

Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, etadahosi:The thought occurred to me, ‘kissa nu kho me idaṁ kammassa phalaṁ, kissa kammassa vipāko, yenāhaṁ etarahi evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo’ti?‘Of what action of mine is this the fruit, of what action the result, that I now have such great power & might?’ Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, etadahosi:Then the thought occurred to me, ‘tiṇṇaṁ kho me idaṁ kammānaṁ phalaṁ, tiṇṇaṁ kammānaṁ vipāko, yenāhaṁ etarahi evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvoti, seyyathidaṁ—
seyyathidaṁ → seyyathīdaṁ (bj, sya-all, km, pts-vp-pli1)
‘This is the fruit of my three [types of] action, the result of three types of action, that I now have such great power & might:
dānassa, damassa, saññamassā’”ti.i.e., generosity, self-control, & restraint.’”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Puññameva so sikkheyya, āyataggaṁ sukhudrayaṁ;Train in acts of merit that yield the foremost profit of bliss– Dānañca samacariyañca, mettacittañca bhāvaye.develop generosity, a life in tune, a mind of good will.

Ete dhamme bhāvayitvā, tayo sukhasamuddaye;
sukhasamuddaye → sukhasamudraye (pts-vp-pli1)
Developing these three things that bring about bliss,
Abyāpajjaṁ sukhaṁ lokaṁ, paṇḍito upapajjatī”ti.
Abyāpajjaṁ → abyāpajjhaṁ (bj, pts-vp-pli1, csp1ed); abyābajjhaṁ (an4.40:1 [40. Udāyīsutta]; iti60:1 [Puññakiriyavatthusutta])
the wise reappear in a world of bliss unalloyed.

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Dutiyaṁ.
