Dānasutta

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:

“Evañce, bhikkhave, sattā jāneyyuṁ dānasaṁvibhāgassa vipākaṁ yathāhaṁ jānāmi, na adatvā bhuñjeyyuṁ, na ca nesaṁ maccheramalaṁ cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭheyya.
datvā → datvāna (sya-all)
“Monks, if beings knew, as I know, the results of giving & sharing, they would not eat without having given, nor would the stain of selfishness overcome their minds.
Yopi nesaṁ assa carimo ālopo carimaṁ kabaḷaṁ, tatopi na asaṁvibhajitvā bhuñjeyyuṁ, sace nesaṁ paṭiggāhakā assu.Even if it were their last bite, their last mouthful, they would not eat without having shared, if there were someone to receive their gift. Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, sattā na evaṁ jānanti dānasaṁvibhāgassa vipākaṁ yathāhaṁ jānāmi, tasmā adatvā bhuñjanti, maccheramalañca nesaṁ cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti.But because beings do not know, as I know, the results of giving & sharing, they eat without having given. The stain of selfishness overcomes their minds.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Evañce sattā jāneyyuṁ, yathāvuttaṁ mahesinā;If beings knew what the Great Seer said, Vipākaṁ saṁvibhāgassa, yathā hoti mahapphalaṁ.how the result of sharing has such great fruit,

Vineyya maccheramalaṁ, vippasannena cetasā;then, subduing the stain of selfishness with brightened awareness, Dajjuṁ kālena ariyesu, yattha dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ.they’d give in season to the noble ones, where a gift bears great fruit.

Annañca datvā bahuno, dakkhiṇeyyesu dakkhiṇaṁ;Having given food as an offering to those worthy of offerings, Ito cutā manussattā, saggaṁ gacchanti dāyakā.many donors, when they pass away from here, the human state, go to heaven.

Te ca saggagatā tattha, modanti kāmakāmino;
saggagatā → saggaṁ gatā (bj, pts-vp-pli1, mr)
They, having gone there to heaven, rejoice, enjoying sensual pleasures.
Vipākaṁ saṁvibhāgassa, anubhonti amaccharā”ti.Unselfish, they partake of the result of sharing.

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
