Ātāpīsutta

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:

“Anātāpī, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anottāpī abhabbo sambodhāya, abhabbo nibbānāya, abhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamāya.
anottāpī → anottappī (si, sya-all, pts-vp-pli1)
“Monks, a person without ardency, without compunction, is incapable of self-awakening, incapable of Unbinding, incapable of attaining the unsurpassed safety from bondage.
Ātāpī ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ottāpī bhabbo sambodhāya, bhabbo nibbānāya, bhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamāyā”ti.
ottāpī → ottappī (si, sya-all, pts-vp-pli1)
A person ardent & compunctious is capable of self-awakening, capable of Unbinding, capable of attaining the unsurpassed safety from bondage.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Anātāpī anottāpī, kusīto hīnavīriyo;With no ardency, no compunction, lazy, with low persistence, Yo thinamiddhabahulo, ahirīko anādaro;
ahirīko → ahiriko (sya-all)
full of sloth & drowsiness, shameless, without respect:
Abhabbo tādiso bhikkhu, phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttamaṁ.he’s incapable, a monk like this, of touching superlative self-awakening.

Yo ca satimā nipako jhāyī, ātāpī ottāpī ca appamatto;But whoever is mindful, masterful, absorbed in jhāna, ardent, concerned, & heedful, Saṁyojanaṁ jātijarāya chetvā, idheva sambodhimanuttaraṁ phuse”ti.cutting the fetter of birth & aging, touches right here a self-awakening un- surpassed.

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Sattamaṁ.
