Vijjāsutta
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
“Avijjā, bhikkhave, pubbaṅgamā akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā anvadeva ahirikaṁ anottappaṁ;“Monks, ignorance precedes the arrival of unskillful qualities; lack of shame & lack of compunction follow after. vijjā ca kho, bhikkhave, pubbaṅgamā kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ samāpattiyā anvadeva hirottappan”ti.Clear knowing precedes the arrival of skillful qualities; shame & compunction follow after.”
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Yā kācimā duggatiyo, asmiṁ loke paramhi ca;Any bad destinations in this world, in the next, Avijjāmūlikā sabbā, icchālobhasamussayā.are rooted in ignorance–all– accumulations of desire & greed.
Yato ca hoti pāpiccho, ahirīko anādaro;
ahirīko → ahiriko (sya-all)And when a person of evil desires lacks shame & respect, Tato pāpaṁ pasavati, apāyaṁ tena gacchati.evil comes from that, and by that he goes to deprivation.Tasmā chandañca lobhañca, avijjañca virājayaṁ;So cleansing away ignorance, desire, & greed, Vijjaṁ uppādayaṁ bhikkhu, sabbā duggatiyo jahe”ti.a monk giving rise to clear knowing would abandon all bad destinations.
