Sukhapatthanāsutta
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
“Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, sukhāni patthayamāno sīlaṁ rakkheyya paṇḍito.“Aspiring to these three forms of bliss, monks, a wise person should guard his virtue. Katamāni tīṇi?Which three? Pasaṁsā me āgacchatūti sīlaṁ rakkheyya paṇḍito, bhogā me uppajjantūti sīlaṁ rakkheyya paṇḍito, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjissāmīti sīlaṁ rakkheyya paṇḍito.[Thinking,] ‘May praise come to me,’ a wise person should guard his virtue. [Thinking,] ‘May wealth come to me,’ a wise person should guard his virtue. [Thinking,] ‘At the break-up of the body, after death, may I reappear in a good destination, a heavenly world,’ a wise person should guard his virtue. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi sukhāni patthayamāno sīlaṁ rakkheyya paṇḍito”ti.Aspiring to these three forms of bliss, a wise person should guard his virtue.”
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Sīlaṁ rakkheyya medhāvī, patthayāno tayo sukhe;Intelligent, you should guard your virtue, aspiring to three forms of bliss: Pasaṁsaṁ vittalābhañca, pecca sagge pamodanaṁ.praise; the obtaining of wealth; and, after death, rejoicing in heaven.
Akarontopi ce pāpaṁ, karontamupasevati;Even if you do no evil but seek out one who does, Saṅkiyo hoti pāpasmiṁ, avaṇṇo cassa rūhati.you’re suspected of evil. your bad reputation grows.
Yādisaṁ kurute mittaṁ, yādisaṁ cūpasevati;The sort of person you make a friend, the sort you seek out, Sa ve tādisako hoti, sahavāso hi tādiso.
sahavāso hi → sahavāsopi (bj, mr)that’s the sort you yourself become– for your living together is of that sort.Sevamāno sevamānaṁ, samphuṭṭho samphusaṁ paraṁ;The one associated with, the one who associates, the one who’s touched, the one who touches another Saro diddho kalāpaṁva, alittamupalimpati;–like an arrow smeared with poison– contaminates the quiver. Upalepabhayā dhīro, neva pāpasakhā siyā.
Upalepabhayā → upalimpabhayā (mr)So, fearing contamination, the enlightened should not be comrades with evil people.Pūtimacchaṁ kusaggena, yo naro upanayhati;A man who wraps rotting fish in a blade of kusa grass Kusāpi pūti vāyanti, evaṁ bālūpasevanā.makes the grass smelly: so it is if you seek out fools.
Tagarañca palāsena, yo naro upanayhati;But a man who wraps powdered incense in the leaf of a tree Pattāpi surabhi vāyanti, evaṁ dhīrūpasevanā.makes the leaf fragrant: so it is if you seek out the enlightened.
Tasmā pattapuṭasseva, ñatvā sampākamattano;
pattapuṭasseva → palāsapuṭasseva (pts-vp-pli1, mr)So, knowing your own outcome as like the leaf-wrapper’s, Asante nupaseveyya, sante seveyya paṇḍito;you shouldn’t seek out those who aren’t good. the wise would associate with those who are. Asanto nirayaṁ nenti, santo pāpenti suggatin”ti.Those who aren’t good lead you to hell. the good help you reach a good destination.
