Devasaddasutta
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
“Tayome, bhikkhave, devesu devasaddā niccharanti samayā samayaṁ upādāya.“Monks, these three divine sounds sound forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.
Katame tayo?Which three?
Yasmiṁ, bhikkhave, samaye ariyasāvako kesamassuṁ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjāya ceteti, tasmiṁ samaye devesu devasaddo niccharati:
pabbajjāya ceteti, tasmiṁ samaye → tasmiṁ bhikkhave samaye (pts-vp-pli1, mr)When a disciple of the noble ones, shaving off his hair & beard, clothing himself in the ochre robe,
makes up his mind to go forth from the home life into homelessness,
on that occasion the divine sound sounds forth among the devas:
‘eso ariyasāvako mārena saddhiṁ saṅgāmāya cetetī’ti.‘This disciple of the noble ones has made up his mind to do battle with Māra.’
Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo devesu devasaddo niccharati samayā samayaṁ upādāya.This is the first divine sound that sounds forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ samaye ariyasāvako sattannaṁ bodhipakkhiyānaṁ dhammānaṁ bhāvanānuyogamanuyutto viharati, tasmiṁ samaye devesu devasaddo niccharati:“When a disciple of the noble ones lives devoted to developing the seven [sets of] qualities that are wings to awakening, on that occasion the divine sound sounds forth among the devas: ‘eso ariyasāvako mārena saddhiṁ saṅgāmetī’ti.‘This disciple of the noble ones is doing battle with Māra.’ Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo devesu devasaddo niccharati samayā samayaṁ upādāya.This is the second divine sound that sounds forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ samaye ariyasāvako āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati, tasmiṁ samaye devesu devasaddo niccharati:“When a disciple of the noble ones, through the ending of effluents, enters & remains in the effluent-free awareness-release & discernment-release, directly knowing & realizing it for himself right in the here-&-now, on that occasion the divine sound sounds forth among the devas: ‘eso ariyasāvako vijitasaṅgāmo tameva saṅgāmasīsaṁ abhivijiya ajjhāvasatī’ti.‘This disciple of the noble ones, having won the battle, now rules victorious at the head of the battle.’ Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyo devesu devasaddo niccharati samayā samayaṁ upādāya.This is the third divine sound that sounds forth among the devas on appropriate occasions. Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo devesu devasaddā niccharanti samayā samayaṁ upādāyā”ti.“These are the three divine sounds that sound forth among the devas on appropriate occasions.”
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Disvā vijitasaṅgāmaṁ, sammāsambuddhasāvakaṁ;Seeing he’s won the battle –the disciple of the Rightly Self-awakened One– Devatāpi namassanti, mahantaṁ vītasāradaṁ.even the devas pay homage to this great one, thoroughly mature.
Namo te purisājañña, yo tvaṁ dujjayamajjhabhū;“Homage to you, O thoroughbred man– you who have won the hard victory, Jetvāna maccuno senaṁ, vimokkhena anāvaraṁ.defeating the army of Death, unhindered in emancipation.”
Iti hetaṁ namassanti, devatā pattamānasaṁ;Thus they pay homage, the devas, to one who has reached the heart’s goal, Tañhi tassa na passanti, yena maccuvasaṁ vaje”ti.for they see in him no means that would bring him under Death’s sway.
